Description
The year: 1799. The place: Dejima, Nagasaki Harbor. This is the Japanese Empire’s only port, their only window to world beyond the ocean. To this port comes Jacob de Zoet, a clerk with the mission of acquiring a fortune in five years, to win the hand of his fianc?e. His intentions are soon eclipsed though, after a chance encounter with Orito Aibagawa, a disfigured midwife of the city’s magistrate. As lines blur, promises are broken, and soon the situation will be beyond Zoet’s worst imaginings!
